Chapter Twenty-Nine

“Oh, Torunn, my sweet girl; that isn’t true.”

“It is, Mama. All I had to do was go with Asta to find you. She only wanted me to walk down the corridor with her. How easy that would have been.”

“But even as a young child you knew your sisters. If Brenna had woken alone, she would have been very afraid.”

“I could have taken Brenna with me. I knew Asta feared the dark. Brenna was always sweet; even from an early age, she was easy to love and reason with. Asta could be stubborn and strong-willed. Because of that, I treated her differently and it caused so much pain. If I’d gone with Asta, walked those twenty-two steps down that corridor, Alvaldr wouldn’t have gotten to her. No one would have suffered in such a manner.”

“Twenty-two steps?” Vora asked.

“I now recall I often counted them when we were on our way to tell you to come kiss us good night, yet I don’t clearly remember that chamber from my childhood memories,” Torunn said.

“After everything that happened that night, I had you sleep in other chambers. I didn’t want to risk you remembering, but as it is I didn’t remember it correctly either. Andor protected us all from the truth by taking away those difficult memories.”

“You and Andor might have been together all those years if I’d simply gone to walk Asta to your chambers.”

“It isn’t likely, for he would have needed to take Knute to safety.”

“But the three of them would have been together. Andor could have raised his son with Reidr. You could have stayed with us and raised Eydis and all of us. Maybe Eydis wouldn’t have done what she did if I’d just walked down that corridor with Asta.”

“We’ll never know, Torunn. Perhaps worse things might have happened. You can’t blame yourself. You were just a child.”

“An older sister who should have walked down a short corridor with her baby sister.”

“Maybe we would have all been killed, Torunn, for Alvaldr would surely have found another way to get inside the fortress. Maybe you might have killed Andor,” Vora said.

“Whatever do you mean, Mama?”

“If you happened upon Andor and me together as Asta did you might have taken his sword and harmed him, for it’s unlikely you would have thought he was only training me as Asta did.”

Torunn actually smiled at that.

“I don’t think I would have been so rash as to harm him. I remember now how much I loved him. We all loved him so. From seeing those memories brought to life, I also see how much you loved one another even back then.”

“You did love him and he all of you. But we don’t know what might have happened if one small detail had been changed how fate would have been different. It might have turned out worse. I might have lost you all. But you mustn’t blame yourself, Torunn. Please don’t. You were only a young child who bore too much responsibility for your younger sisters.
