Chapter Twenty-Nine
âOh, Torunn, my sweet girl; that isnât true.â
âIt is, Mama. All I had to do was go with Asta to find you. She only wanted me to walk down the corridor with her. How easy that would have been.â
âBut even as a young child you knew your sisters. If Brenna had woken alone, she would have been very afraid.â
âI could have taken Brenna with me. I knew Asta feared the dark. Brenna was always sweet; even from an early age, she was easy to love and reason with. Asta could be stubborn and strong-willed. Because of that, I treated her differently and it caused so much pain. If Iâd gone with Asta, walked those twenty-two steps down that corridor, Alvaldr wouldnât have gotten to her. No one would have suffered in such a manner.â
âTwenty-two steps?â Vora asked.
âI now recall I often counted them when we were on our way to tell you to come kiss us good night, yet I donât clearly remember that chamber from my childhood memories,â Torunn said.
âAfter everything that happened that night, I had you sleep in other chambers. I didnât want to risk you remembering, but as it is I didnât remember it correctly either. Andor protected us all from the truth by taking away those difficult memories.â
âYou and Andor might have been together all those years if Iâd simply gone to walk Asta to your chambers.â
âIt isnât likely, for he would have needed to take Knute to safety.â
âBut the three of them would have been together. Andor could have raised his son with Reidr. You could have stayed with us and raised Eydis and all of us. Maybe Eydis wouldnât have done what she did if Iâd just walked down that corridor with Asta.â
âWeâll never know, Torunn. Perhaps worse things might have happened. You canât blame yourself. You were just a child.â
âAn older sister who should have walked down a short corridor with her baby sister.â
âMaybe we would have all been killed, Torunn, for Alvaldr would surely have found another way to get inside the fortress. Maybe you might have killed Andor,â Vora said.
âWhatever do you mean, Mama?â
âIf you happened upon Andor and me together as Asta did you might have taken his sword and harmed him, for itâs unlikely you would have thought he was only training me as Asta did.â
Torunn actually smiled at that.
âI donât think I would have been so rash as to harm him. I remember now how much I loved him. We all loved him so. From seeing those memories brought to life, I also see how much you loved one another even back then.â
âYou did love him and he all of you. But we donât know what might have happened if one small detail had been changed how fate would have been different. It might have turned out worse. I might have lost you all. But you mustnât blame yourself, Torunn. Please donât. You were only a young child who bore too much responsibility for your younger sisters.
